FAQ’s

How do I know if I need therapy?

You do not need a mental health diagnosis or to be in crisis to seek therapy. You may find ithelpful if difficulties are affecting your relationships, work, education, sleep, confidence or everyday life or if things simply feel harder to manage than usual.

Therapy can also offer space to understand yourself better, explore experiences or work towards changes that matter to you. If you are unsure where to start, an initial conversation with Amarkash can help you explore whether therapy feels right for you.

What difficulties can you help with?

You may be seeking support for a particular difficulty, or you may simply know that things do not feel quite right. You do not need to have the right words or a clear explanation before getting in touch.

During an initial conversation, we can explore what you are experiencing and whether our expertise fits your needs. If another service would be more appropriate, we will discuss this openly and, where possible, help you identify other options.

How do we choose the right workshop?

You do not need to know exactly what your team needs before contacting us. We will take time to understand your organisation, listen to the challenges you are experiencing and explore what you hope to achieve. Together, we can identify a workshop that feels relevant and useful for your team.

What’s the difference between a clinical psychologist and a counsellor?

Clinical psychologists and counsellors both offer psychological support, and their work can overlap. Their training pathways and areas of expertise differ.

Clinical psychologists complete extensive training in understanding psychological difficulties, assessment and evidence-based therapies, typically including a professional doctorate. This is a qualification in clinical psychology; it does not mean they are medical doctors.

Counsellors undertake training in counselling approaches that help people explore their feelings, experiences and relationships. Some also have specialist expertise or further qualifications.

Finding someone whose experience suits your needs and with whom you feel comfortable is an important part of choosing a therapist.

Which types of therapy do you offer?

At Amarkash, we draw on evidence-based psychological therapies and tailor our approach to your needs, preferences and goals.

Following your assessment, your psychologist will explain the approaches they recommend, what they involve and why they may be helpful. You will have opportunities to ask questions and decide together how to proceed.

Do I need a GP referral?

You can contact Amarkash directly to enquire about private therapy without a GP referral.

If you plan to use private medical insurance, your insurer may require a referral or authorisation before your first appointment. Please check your policy and confirm with us whether we accept your cover before booking.

If you are unsure what support you need, we can discuss your concerns and help you consider the next steps.

How much does therapy cost?

Fees vary depending on the type and length of appointment and the service you need. At Amarkash, we will explain the relevant fees before you book, so you can make an informed decision.

If you hope to use private medical insurance, please check your cover with your insurer and contact us to confirm whether we can accept it.

We understand that cost can be an important consideration. You are welcome to ask about fees when you enquire, and we will explain the options available.

Can I choose between online and in-person therapy?

You are welcome to discuss your preferences when you contact Amarkash. We will explain the appointment options currently available and consider what may suit your needs.

If you choose online therapy, having a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable speaking can help you get the most from your sessions.

How soon can I start therapy?

Taking the first step can feel significant, and we understand that you may want support as soon as possible. When you contact Amarkash, we will let you know about current availability and any waiting times.

We will also explain what happens next, so you know what to expect before your first appointment.

Can you accommodate accessibility or communication needs?

Please let us know about any access, communication, sensory or other needs that may affect your appointments. You are also welcome to tell us what has helped you in other settings.

We will discuss the adjustments we can offer and work with you to make sessions as accessible and comfortable as possible.

Is therapy confidential?

We understand that talking about personal experiences can feel daunting. At Amarkash, protecting your privacy is an important part of building a trusting therapeutic relationship.

What you share in therapy is treated confidentially, although there are some limits—for example, where there are serious concerns about your safety or someone else’s safety, or where disclosure is legally required. Your psychologist will explain confidentiality, record keeping and any relevant supervision arrangements at the beginning of your work together. Wherever possible, we will discuss any need to share information with you first.

Will my employer know what I discuss in therapy?

If your employer funds your therapy, it is understandable to have questions about privacy. Employer funding does not automatically give your employer access to what you discuss. Before sessions begin, we will explain what information, if any, will be shared, with whom and for what purpose. We will also discuss consent and the limits of confidentiality, so you can make an informed decision about accessing support.

What happens in the first therapy session?

Your first session is a chance to get to know your psychologist, talk about what has brought you to therapy and ask any questions you may have. There is no expectation to explain everything at once you can take things at a pace that feels manageable.

We will explore your current difficulties, relevant experiences and what you hope to gain from therapy. We will also discuss how sessions work, including confidentiality and its limits.

Together, we will begin to understand your needs and consider which therapeutic approaches may be helpful. You will have space to decide whether you feel comfortable working together, and we will agree the next steps collaboratively.

What if I find it difficult to talk?

It is common to feel nervous or unsure about what to say, particularly when starting therapy. You do not need to prepare a full account of your experiences or share everything straight away.

Your psychologist will help guide the conversation, and you can let them know if something feels difficult to discuss. Together, we can find a pace and way of working that feels manageable.

Can I bring someone to my appointment?

If having someone with you would help you feel more comfortable, please let us know before your appointment.

We can discuss how they might be involved while making sure you have space to express your own needs and wishes.

How long does each session last?

Therapy sessions usually last around 50 minutes. Some assessments or specialist appointments may require longer, and we will confirm the length before you book.

Your session provides dedicated time to explore what matters to you, with space towards the end to reflect and consider any next steps.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

Everyone’s needs are different. The number of sessions will depend on what brings you to therapy, your goals and the type of support that is helpful for you.

Some people benefit from a shorter course of therapy, while others value more time to work through their difficulties. Following your assessment, we will discuss an initial plan and review it together as therapy progresses.

At Amarkash, we aim to offer purposeful support at a pace that suits your needs. You are welcome to discuss your progress, preferences or concerns at any stage.

What if I need to cancel or rearrange an appointment?

We understand that circumstances can change. If you need to cancel or rearrange a session, please contact us as soon as possible.

We will explain our cancellation policy, including the notice required and any applicable charges, before you book your first appointment.

What if therapy does not feel helpful, or I do not feel comfortable with my psychologist?

Feeling heard and understood matters. We welcome honest feedback, including when something does not feel helpful or the approach does not feel right for you.

Where you feel able, please share this with your psychologist. Together, you can explore what could change, review your goals or consider whether another therapist or service might better meet your needs.

Can I stop therapy at any time?

Yes. Taking part in therapy is your choice, and you can decide to pause or stop.

If you are considering ending, you are welcome to discuss this with your psychologist. This can provide an opportunity to reflect on your experience, review what has helped and consider any ongoing support you may want. Any agreed cancellation terms will still apply.
